Chagford is an ancient Stannary town situated on the
north eastern edge of Dartmoor. Here miners brought
their tin for weighing and valuing. The last tin mine in
the area closed in 1903. It is a lively friendly
town with a good range of shops and four pubs to choose
from. Castle Drogo, the last castle to be built in this
country and now owned by the National Trust is just a
few miles away. There is wonderful walking in the area
with magnificent scenery both on the moor and along the
river Teign through surrounding farmland.
Chagford also has an outdoor heated swimming pool, a
beautifully situated cricket/football pitch and for
those seeking sea and sand the south coast is about 20
miles away. A list of other local attractions can be
found on the Chagford Page.
The Cathedral City of Exeter is about 17 miles away and
a spectacular drive across the moors takes you to the
enchanting market town of Tavistock. Whatever the
weather you will not be short of things to do!
